Gamla Stan: a first-timer’s guide to Stockholm’s Old Town

Cobbled lanes, a royal palace and the city's oldest square. How to spend a relaxed half day in the place where Stockholm began.
Colourful facades on an old town street

Gamla Stan is where Stockholm began in the 13th century, and it is still the best place to start a first visit. The Old Town sits on a small island between Lake Mälaren and the Baltic Sea, so everything is within walking distance. Half a day is enough to see the highlights at a calm pace, with time left for a coffee break.

Start at Stortorget

Stortorget is the oldest square in Stockholm and the heart of Gamla Stan. The tall, colourful merchant houses on its west side are among the most photographed buildings in Sweden. On the north side, the old Stock Exchange building is home to the Nobel Prize Museum.

The Royal Palace

A few steps away is the Royal Palace, the official residence of the Swedish monarch, with more than 600 rooms. Several parts are open to visitors, including the Royal Apartments and the Treasury. The changing of the guard takes place in the outer courtyard and is worth planning your walk around.

Storkyrkan and the narrowest alley

Storkyrkan, Stockholm Cathedral, stands right next to the palace. Inside, look for the sculpture of Saint George and the Dragon from 1489. Then head south to Mårten Trotzigs gränd, the narrowest alley in the city, only about 90 centimetres wide at its tightest point.

Take a fika

Fika is the Swedish coffee break, usually with a cinnamon bun or a cardamom bun. Many cafés in Gamla Stan are set in old vaulted cellars, which makes them a pleasant stop on a cold or rainy day.

Practical tips

  • Wear comfortable shoes. The streets are cobbled and some are steep.
  • In summer, visit early in the morning or late in the afternoon to avoid the busiest hours.
  • Leave the main streets, Västerlånggatan and Österlånggatan, for the quieter side lanes.
  • Walk over to Riddarholmen for one of the best views across Lake Mälaren.

See Gamla Stan with a local guide

A private walking tour with an authorised Stockholm guide brings the stories behind the façades to life, and the pace is always yours. Explore Sweden or design your private tour.
