Denmark, Norway, Sweden and Finland are close to each other and well connected, which makes it easy to see several countries in one trip. The key is choosing a realistic route and giving each place enough time.
Choose a route that flows
A classic first route links the capitals with the Norwegian fjords: Copenhagen, Oslo, the fjords, Stockholm and Helsinki. Around two weeks lets you enjoy each stop without rushing. With less time, focus on two or three places and come back for the rest.
Getting between the countries
- Trains connect Copenhagen and Stockholm in about five hours, crossing the Øresund Bridge.
- Overnight ferries run between Copenhagen and Oslo and between Stockholm and Helsinki, so you travel while you sleep.
- Short flights are the quickest option for longer distances, such as Oslo to Stockholm.
- The railway between Oslo and Bergen is one of the most scenic in Europe and a good way to reach the fjords.
Four countries, four currencies
Denmark uses the Danish krone, Norway the Norwegian krone, Sweden the Swedish krona and Finland the euro. Cards are accepted almost everywhere and many places no longer take cash, so you rarely need to exchange money.
When to go
From May to September the days are long and boats, mountain roads and outdoor sights are fully open. Midsummer in June is a special time to be in the region. Winter is darker and quieter, with Christmas markets in December and the chance of northern lights further north.
Keep the pace comfortable
- Plan at least two nights in each city to avoid packing every morning.
- Book popular museums, fjord trips and trains early if you travel in summer.
- Leave one free afternoon per city for a walk, a café or simply rest.
